Yes, it seems like Stripe payment gateway already made this as minimum requirement, so you have to consider to support SSL on your site in order to use this Stripe payment gateway.

May I support SSL it just in the checkout page?

You should consult with your webhosting provider regarding this because Payplans extension is not handle this SSL configuration stuff.

I believe nowadays most of the payment gateways required to use SSL for secure purpose.

Perhaps you can share with us which kind of payment gateway you plan to use so we can check on that payment gateway documentation page and see whether can use it without site support SSL or not.
