Correct me if I'm wrong here:

The successful method:
Click on your username and select groups. Select the group in question. Select the 3 dots and select create event and follow the process.

-> Do you mean you create an event under a group for this (like this: https://www.screencast.com/t/r2XDIeI4cm ) ? If yes, it will go to choose event category page and the event created will notify to the member in the group.

The UNSUCCESSFUL method:
Select the small folder icon and group name under the title of an existing event. It shows a blue box with "New Event". Follow the process of creating an event.

If you use the unsuccessful method we observe the following:
1. The process does not ask you to select a category for the event
2. The event does not send out any notifications of its creation
3. The event does not show up in certain modules such as the upcoming events module.

If yes,

1. The process does not ask you to select a category for the event

-> Yes, it will not ask you to select a category as you already go to specific event category as you click the 'Monday Night Bible Study/Home Group' folder icon (for example). So, the event will be created under this category

2. The event does not send out any notifications of its creation

where it is not under a group as it doesn't send out notification to members

3. The event does not show up in certain modules such as the upcoming events module.
