I am relatively new to Joomla! and totally new to Easy Discuss; in short, I don't know anything.

The site I am building will be restricted to approved users. If someone wants to submit their information for approval, I would like them to see a page that gives membership requirements and a contact point; it would also have a login/password "box" for regular users.

I've been unable to determine if this is a Joomla! function or something I set-up in Easy discuss. I've looked at the Easy Discuss documentation; it doesn't seem to touch on security.

So, the question boils down to: how do I achieve my goal. Is this a matter for:

a. Joomla!
b. A different extension
c. Easy Discuss

If this ball is in your court, how do I go about making this "front page". Please remember, I know nothing, so please use small words.
Thanks for choosing Joomla framework to build your website

Do you mean you would like to setup membership subscription plan for your new member which come to your site register?

If yes, i would recommended you these following 2 membership subscription extension.

Hope this will help.

These offer far more than I need.

This will not be a paid subscription. It, however, will be available to only approved members.

All I need is something that will:

[1] provide a way for people to apply for access
[2] have a login/password option on the opening page

Once person is approved for access, would this extension also manage user passwords or would I need a separate extension for that?

Hello Mark,

Thanks for writing back to us and thank you for simplifying your requests I will try my best to answer them both below:

[1] provide a way for people to apply for access

EasyDiscuss doesn't have such functionality but what I would suggest, is for you to create a new category where people could post requests and you as the moderator / admin would then grant access to the user by adding them into the respective Joomla user group.

Would this solve your problem?

[2] have a login/password option on the opening page

This really isn't a problem and you can already achieve this by creating a menu item that links to the login layout in Joomla. If you don't like that, you could always use EasyDiscuss module to render a login form on the side of the page. For instance, take a look at the module "EasyDiscuss Welcome" on our demo here, http://easydiscuss.stackideas.com/

Would this solve your problems?

The "EasyDiscuss Welcome" is getting closer. The login on the side solves that need.

I looked at support documentation and can't tell if the second requirement can be met.

If a person doesn't have a login, they can't see the discussion forms. I need a page with just some text telling people how to register for site access.

The sentence "This really isn't a problem and you can already achieve this by creating a menu item that links to the login layout in Joomla" is a bit cryptic. I know very little about Joomla!. I'll dig into the Joomla! login material.

Thanks

Hello Mark,

There's a couple of ways to achieve your second goal. The first is to utilize the login module and should you need to add additional text there, you could then edit the module's template file in /modules/mod_easydiscuss_welcome/tmpl/default.php

To create a menu item that links to the registration page, all you need to do is to:

1. Access menu manager in Joomla
2. Click on a menu where you would like the menu item to reside on
3. Click on the New button
4. Enter a name for your menu
5. Click on the Select button.
6. A popup appears and choose Registration form, http://take.ms/Nx4yt
7. Save your menu
8. Refresh your site and you will see the menu item

I'm still trying to make a menu item that links to a registration page.

Your directions were:

To create a menu item that links to the registration page, all you need to do is to:

1. Access menu manager in Joomla [worked]
2. Click on a menu where you would like the menu item to reside on [worked]
3. Click on the New button [worked]
4. Enter a name for your menu [worked]
5. Click on the Select button. [worked]
6. A popup appears and choose Registration form, http://take.ms/Nx4yt [ no popup appeared]

7. Save your menu and you will see the menu item

I've attached a screen shot of what I get through menu manager

Can you take a look and tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thanks

Hello Mark,

I think you tried to add a menu and not a menu item. The term "menu" here is rather confusing because a menu in Joomla could contain more than 1 menu items.

1. Take a look at my screen shot here, http://take.ms/vQ22T
2. After clicking the "Add new menu item", you should see this screen http://take.ms/ondDs
3. Type your menu title that you want
4. Click on the Select button, http://take.ms/rcXYv
5. You will see a popup like this, http://take.ms/0Kyfn . Select Users > Registration Form
6. Save your new menu item
