What is the best way to setup the shortest URL?

For example:
http://www.example.com/george-patton
http://www.example.com/groups/surfing

Still struggling to get the right configuration. Looking for docs that can guide me so I can avoid unnecessary numbers that is forced by Joomla 3x.
Hello Peter,

The only way to achieve this if you have a menu for your dashboard which is the frontpage menu item.

I click on Menu > Main Menu

then I click on the star to set community like so http://i.imgur.com/3s31E2U.png

http://www.example.com/profile/george-patton
http://www.example.com/groups/item/1-surfing

What else am I missing?

Hm, if the menu is set to default, it should just be /profile/ID-username

Ah okay that's not possible It needs to be tied with a "view" otherwise the system wouldn't know the item that you are trying to view.
