Unfortunately, we cant achieved that currently as Easydiscuss use Joomla and dont have it own registration and login feature. And it is not possible to add these feature to Easydiscuss.

But it would be best if you can submit a feature request regarding this issues in our voice page -> http://stackideas.com/voices, so everyone else could vote for it, the more people request on this, and we will priority consider it.

Is it possible then for them to use their Nickname from their user profile on the Forum instead of their username?

You can configure this from backend > Easydiscuss > setting > layout > user > User's Display Name format
