'Select profile type' page - how to hide profile members

The 'Select profile type' page displays "There are {number} others who are also a member of this profile."

Since this is a public page, I do not want this information displayed. Is there some setting that controls this display? If not, what template file must be modified to remove this display?

you can disable this in your easysocial backend -> themes -> your theme -> registration as you can see here: http://screencast.com/t/IviS7pgfqc

My recommendation:
This setting is buried. I recommend that these settings be located under Settings >> Registration in a future release of ES.
