1 - Can I add custom fields to the information shown for each member in the search results?

Yes, you can add new search filter for the certain custom field condition from advanced search area, you can watch my video here : https://take.ms/NP1fP

2 - Can I sort the order of the search results by profile type, and then alphabetical?

Are you referring normal search or advanced search?
Currently only possible to sort the order from the advanced search result but it doesn't order by the profile type. https://www.screencast.com/t/wJQJHIgIyz

I'm sorry I should have been more clear.

In the search results, where it says "No friends yet. No followers yet. No badges yet." Can I instead have it display a custom field populated by the user? Like a phone number or address?

In Jomsocial, I was able to add "User Information" to show additional fields in the search results. See the attached screenshots.



I can see the available sorting options. What file or files can I edit to add more sorting options?

Currently we do not have this such of setting to set what information to appear under the search result area.

But you can modify on this file -> JoomlaFolder/components/com_easysocial/themes/wireframe/helpers/listing/user/listing.php

Then override into your current template file location JoomlaFolder/templates/YourCurrentTemplate/html/com_easysocial/helpers/listing/user/listing.php
