Sorry but not entirely sure if I understand you here. What do you mean by automatic search filters?

One of the required fields when members sign up is called artist type. The user get to select if they are , male model, female model , photographer, makeup artist etc. I wanted to know if I could make a search filter for those selections

Yes they should be able to be search if and only if you searched them using Advanced Search as you can see here http://take.ms/alQsG and http://take.ms/sR8cj.

Those fields are searchable if you set this fields as searchable as you can see here http://take.ms/wxeUl.(Custom Fields>workflows>user workflows).

Please give it a try and see how it goes.
