So, I have some time during the weekend and was playing around with this idea with the way the story stream works on 1.2. Let me know what do you guys think about this? Would this be ideal for your site? The link to the video is in the next post.

I kinda like the existing one because it's a little more organized.

P/S: This may or may not go into 1.2. We're trying to ensure that what we build makes sense for everyone Hence, I am asking here in the forums so please do not assume that this would be included in 1.2

Hi Mark,
With the additional space for the fields, the input flow seems more fluid, which is always great.
But on the downside, more screen real-estate is being used to capture user input, detracting from the primary purpose of the screen: the content stream.
This stands out in the demo when you had to scroll down after the photo div became visible.

I personally prefer the slim and simple look and feel of the current control.

Regards,
Kevin

Mark,

You are making the month of January and awesomely exciting month. By allowing the site administrator the ability to tailor their site such as what Kevin asked or shared as feedback, and then what I am asking for gives EasySocial the ultimate flexibility for end users.

To satisfy the most amount of users? Allow the administrator to decide which Stream Type to use for their site. In the Dashboard Settings, Stream add the option to allow for:

1. Minimal Content in Stream - Text, Photos, and location, OR

2. Full Content in Stream - Text, photos, recipient of Share post, detect location, and a URL link. See screenshot image attachment below.

Daisy chaining Share Stream content -- This is exactly what I was planning to ask you if it is possible, I had asked if this was possible many months ago and Jensen responded that he would bring this up in a meeting. Giving user the ability to do chaining of content in the Share stream is extremely flexible and the ultimate way to allow them to deliver or Share content.

Benefit to Users of network: Users have the ability to share the content they want to share.
Benefit to Network Owners: 1. Flexibility to use Minimal Content in Stream OR 2. Full Content in Stream

Further Benefits: I can see this is a huge feature for the following reason: Free User Access Level vs Paid User Access Level to post content on the stream. - A network administrator can use such a feature to allow free users to only use feature 1
- Free Access: Minimal Content Share in Stream,
- Paid Access: When the user becomes a paid member, the users will get full access to feature 2, or access to post Full Content to the Stream. <---- This is the drawing feature to becoming a paid member. More features. The INCENTIVE TO UPGRADE.

For my network, I would really love it to allow user the following features in the Share Stream:

1. People can add their text content;
2. People can then add photos;
3. While the photos are being uploaded, the user can add a location of the photos;
4. Then the user can decide who to send the Share information to as you are showing;
5 Add a link to give more access to further information. And then if you can allow the user to add a link so they can then send the viewers of the content stream to visit a link or page for more information; -- I can see this being extremely useful, especially when sharing photos. Too often people post photos to get someone's attention, and then they don't add any further information to the photos, and then people don't engage in the conversation. If there is a link available, the person who shares the stream content can point viewers to a link for more information. ie: a link to a blog post describing the vacation, or the tourism site, or the information behind the photos, or a Flickr location etc.
6. And if possible, allowing users to ability to add a video would be awesome. (This is an optional item and might be too much, but I can see it being useful)

Screencast 1 - Feedback to your screencast : http://screencast.com/t/0hvZQXZwa
Screencast 2 - showing you what I want my network to allow users to be able to do in the Share Stream: http://screencast.com/t/1dDdHjJ1AkTk

Essentially the more that a user can daisy chain different content into a Share Stream and post it such as text, photos, location, links,who the recipient is going to be, and then possibly a video into the stream to tell a story, the better it will be for users to tell their stories. You are allowing people the flexibility to publish their content they way they want to Share it.

Great point with the link, Randall. It's limiting having either a link or photos, but not both.

The Columbia River looks absolutely beautiful.

Kevin, I try to promote my area that I grew up when I get a chance.

Back when this video below was created I wanted to build ChamberVoice.com - I attempted to build this new network with that OTHER Social Networking extension but their were too many setbacks. I found out where the lead programmer went and Mark is now working with his team to build EasySocial, the ULTIMATE Social Networking Development tool for people like you and me. And what is really appreciated is Mark asking for Feedback from us users. We all have visions for what we want our networks to be able to do for our users. Flexibility is the key.

Had I built the network I would be struggling today and probably doing what so many others are either doing or wanting to do. MIGRATE to EASYSOCIAL. I am so glad the way things happened for me. I held off building ChamberVoice beyond a prototype. Now that I started building the network using EasySocial, EasyBlog, and EasyDiscuss I smile because I am able to build the network I have always dreamed of creating. This would only be possible with the awesome extensions developed by StackIdeas.com, and from the feedback of SI customers and users. It is so cool to be a part of this developer/customer feedback cycle to see EasySocial and the other SI extensions evolve. Version 1.2 is going to be awesome whether this feature described is in it or not, and I am sure Mark and his team will build us the most flexible feature set they can.

Regarding: The Columbia River looks absolutely beautiful. - Yes, the Mighty Columbia was once known as one of the best salmon rivers in the world. That all changed with the addition of all the DAMS being built on the Columbia. The Salmon stopped because of the dams. The rainbow, being a fresh water fish flourished, then they started to die off because of further people issues. At one time over 30 years ago the area was desolate and dry, because of the pollution from the Plywood Mill 20 kilometres north on the Columbia, and because of the industrial plant at Trail BC. The companies were told for years to clean up their act and not pollute. They both cleaned up their operations and spent almost 2 billion cleaning up the plants. They also reforested the area and added fertilizer and now they look after the land. The fishing came back on this area of the Columbia River as well as the vegetation and the multitude of wildlife and it is incredible now. It's not what it was over 100 years ago, but pretty close. See, here is an example of the things that could be posted to the stream of a network to tell a story. The story, the photos, the person I am with, who it is shared to, the location, and then a link to the video, either on the same network in a blog post or discussion, or group discussion, or on Youtube. A person on the network becomes the Chief Story Teller if they have the right combination of tools. Mark and his team ask and listen to feedback. What more could we ask for. It's like having your own extension development team.

If you enjoy fishing, the enjoy this video. This is just one of the regular late afternoon - early evening fishing trips just up the Columbia River from the sub-division that I live. The Columbia River has an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 rainbow trout per kilometre from the Canada USA border at Waneta BC, up past Trail BC to Castlegar BC. That's an average of 290,000 fish to 580,000 rainbow trout in this 29 kilomtre stretch of the Columbia River. If you want to catch a rainbow, one of the best sports fish with fight in their bite, you can do so with just a hook and a line. Fly fishing is the best method. And the most fun.

Columbia River Dry Fly Fishing - Little Slough Eddy
The stretch of Columbia River from the Canada US border at Waneta past Trail BC to Castlegar BC recently rated in BC's Best Dry Fly Fishing in flyfisherman.com magazine as one of the Top 10 in BC and North America for rainbow trout and dry fly fishing.

On July 5, 2009 friends Randall (me) and Pat Vlanich both from the sub-division of Sunningdale in Trail BC went fishing on the Columbia River north of Trail BC at a popular fishing spot called Little Slough Eddy. The evening was relaxing and enjoyable, and the fly fishing was spectacular. The evening saw 17 rainbow trout averaging from 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 lbs on the line, 9 rainbow landed to the boat, and a catch limit of 2 each. Would could be better than that? Life is grand... especially on the Columbia River near Trail, BC Canada.

LINKS in SHARE STREAM
One of the things about the Share stream right now is that can be a bit of a frustration at times is that it automatically adds the last link into the Stream content if there is a link in the text, and it ignores making all other links active. What would be real nice is to have the following feature enabled by the user:

A user who posts Content can set a preference to either:

1. Auto-add the last link from within the text content pasted into the Share Stream but make all links in the story active.
2. Allow links to be with the text, and then made active, but allow the user to decide to post the link into the Link field. ie: Video, link to another page etc.

As it sits right now, you get one link showing up in the stream that gets posted. Many stories or content have more than one link. I have tons of stories written from before, and I copy and paste to start a Share story. Then I have to delete the link etc, and then add the video link and click ENTER. This can be a pain. This comes back to giving the user the ULTIMATE FLEXIBILITY.

The last thing the world needs is another Facebook and how the fb stream works. The EasySocial Team is pioneering and breaking new ground and while streams can be similar to popular networks such as Facebook, I personally believe that the StackIdeas Team can push the flexibility to the limits, and come up with the ULTIMATE CONTENT SHARING STREAM and users will flock to sites using EasySocial as the basis for the social network. There is a rise of NICHE social Networks and EasySocial will be a leading tool used by site developers.

Example of what happens to me often - I work around it but it would be so nice to see some features added:

While I was researching this post, and looking for a video on Youtube to use in my screencast I found this video. I posted it and thought you might enjoy it.

For your entertainment value: What goes on when you are not there!
Ever wonder what bears do when we're not looking? These images were captured with a remote wildlife camera as various species visited a "communications" or "rub" tree in Kananaskis Country, leaving a scent as a form of communication to other bears and animals. The image data is being collected as part of a collaborative study looking at multi-species habitat use within our mountainous landscape. In addition to various wildlife species, millions of people visit Kananaskis Country each year.

Mark,

You are from a rare breed of entrepreneurs. You ask for feedback and value the feedback. That's what sets StackIdeas apart from so many developers.

The refinement of features within the Content Share Stream in EasySocial is essential to the success of the products that users can create with it and in turn this makes StackIdeas more successful.

I read a good article tonight on Entrepreneur.com called: Is your Product a 'Vitamin' or is it a 'Painkiller'? I see EasySocial becoming the 'Painkiller' solution that social network site developers need to create their vision for niche social networks. The more flexibility you give site administrators to create all sorts of social based sites, to resolve painpoints in content creation and information/knowledge sharing the better EasySocial will become known as the MUST HAVE extension for social network building.

Is your startup building a "painkiller" or a "vitamin" for your clients? In order to get their attention and build a sizable business of scale, "painkillers" are a must.

Mark,

I was looking at the screenshots from the Blog post about V1.2 and I noticed that you have added Bookmarks to Groups.
This must mean you can share content to all types of popular social network providers.

Will you have Bookmarks available in the main front page Share Stream?

I like the new version indeed

Does the share box expand when you click inside it as it does in 1.1.4 ? If it does then this is awesome ! The share box does not take up space when you just want to read the stream, but when you want to share something if it expands to this then it is great looking and easy for non tech savy users
