Hello,

1- Is there a way to set the resize dimension for photos during upload?

2-I think there should be an option to delete the original picture onced resized, otherwise your server will fill up pretty quickly if you have a big community.

3- Does the setting for the quality of the photo in the backend apply to the user's avatar, because the quality of the avatar once uploaded is pretty crappy.
Hello,

Please find the answers to your inquiries below:

1- Is there a way to set the resize dimension for photos during upload?

Nope, it is resized accordingly to the dimensions that we need in the photo albums viewer.

2-I think there should be an option to delete the original picture onced resized, otherwise your server will fill up pretty quickly if you have a big community.

The purpose of the original picture is so that when you rotate an image, the quality is still retained. If you rotate it 10 times using the rotated image source, your picture quality will be really bad.

3- Does the setting for the quality of the photo in the backend apply to the user's avatar, because the quality of the avatar once uploaded is pretty crappy.

The quality should be pretty good unless you are trying to enlarge the avatar. We don't have a settings for this

Thanks for you reply Mark,

I still think there should be an option to delete the original photo. Nowadays, most photos are high resolutions (4M-6M), just make it an option.
The rotate function is not that important of a feature, people don't use it...how often do you rotate a photo online???

I think I agree with checksum. Keeping all of the original photos will fill up easily the hosting space (as long as you don't transfer them to, say, S3... but you said that originals never get transferred to external storage). Rotating could be a useful function but you only do it once, don't you?
Make an option to keep originals or delete them and everyone will choose accordingly.

I'd like to add my voice to this topic... option to resize photos during upload far outweighs any loss of quality when rotating them. At least make it an option and let the website owner decide.

Allowing the admin to choose the resized photo dimensions is a must have. For example allowing the admin to specify the large, small, medium photos when they are resized. This way the admin can carefully select the number of pixels to use per size which will more efficiently use bandwidth. For example this could not only save a lot of space, but speed up some sites depending on the template width and such.

Your current choices of sizes is pretty good, but we all have custom needs when it comes to sizing. Responsiveness helps, but we shouldn't let it do everything.

Hey guys,

Sorry for the delay of this reply, I am actually down with a bad fever and cold It's a "flu season" here in Malaysia due to the crazy humidity and heat! I need to get out of here haha.

Yeah, I guess if all the sizes are configurable, it should be much more manage-able but let us focus on more important stuffs with the base of EasySocial first (Especially the stream). Once most of these are sorted out and probably after the 1.3 beta is out, we'll discuss about this again

Let us do what we do best

Thanks Mark for considering it. Get well soon and don't over work yourself. Unfortunately I won't be able to test ES 1.3 beta considering I'll be away until August in a far off land. Sending you positive vibes.

Mountain climbing in South America! Huascarán Sur and Alpamayo for sure. Then some American classics and Canadian Rockies. 40 days of amazing climbs, might be the adventure of a life time. Before I go I plan to make a few important posts here. Anyways here are a few hints on my plans:

Gorgeous pics Josh! have a wonderful trip!

On topic, the amount of storage currently provided by hosting providers is generally quite generous, so I don't think it is super high priority, I personally appreciate having the original quality photo stored. But, I do think providing the flexibility in the backend will help people with growing communities on smaller hosting packages.

On a different note, I am with Checksum on his third suggestion, I do think it would be nice with an option to have higher res avatars.

Take care, Mark. When I'm down with the flu I drink plenty of tea with lemon and honey. It not only flushes them flu bugs out of my system, but it's also one of the few things that doesn't taste like moldy cardboard. Get well soon!

Josh, if it wasn't for all that snow I'd be green with envy. Have fun!

Those photos were not taken by me. Most mountain photos I post here are taken by me, but not this time considering I've never been to South America.I can assure you I will take many photos.

Anyways, regarding what Jannik said, agreed. Rather than continuing to create more avatar sizes (right now there are already too many) it would be much smarter to specify the image size.
