Hi,

A few questions reg. Events (ES 1.3.30):

1) We've created invite-only groups and assumed that events created within such groups will automatically be invite only, and notification sent only to members of the group. However when a group admin creates an event in such a group, it's being created as an "Open Event" and being sent to all members of the community [not just limited to the group]. Are we missing some setting? We've set ES->Settings->Events->Include Group Events in Listings = Yes. Is that causing this issue?

2) How can we disable the option for members to create "Open Events" in groups. Default event type in Groups is being set as "Open events". This is causing several issues. How can we completely disable the option to create "Open Events" or "Open Discussion" [if there's such a thing]?

3) Refer attachment. We want to hide Create Event option from main dashboard as well as from Manage Group drop-down menu option in groups. How can we accomplish this?

4) Our group admins are creating certain "Mandatory" events that all group members should automatically become a part of [without having to RSVP/click "Attending"]. Is it possible? If not, unless a member clicks "Attending", the events do not show up in their Events section. We want these mandatory events to appear in their events section regardless of whether they've accepted/clicked Attending.

Appreciate your help, as always!
Hi Juz,

We believe we have found the root caused of this issue. It seems like it only occur when you created an event using the story form inside the group. Can you download my attachment below and place it inside your /media/com_easysocial/apps/group/events/ folder and see how it goes?

Hey Juz,

I am really sorry for the delay of this reply as it is actually a public day off for us here. Please find my response to your inquiries below:

1) We've created invite-only groups and assumed that events created within such groups will automatically be invite only, and notification sent only to members of the group. However when a group admin creates an event in such a group, it's being created as an "Open Event" and being sent to all members of the community [not just limited to the group]. Are we missing some setting? We've set ES->Settings->Events->Include Group Events in Listings = Yes. Is that causing this issue?

You should turn off that feature if you do not want events created in group to appear on the listing of events. This way, your events can only be found in the groups.

2) How can we disable the option for members to create "Open Events" in groups. Default event type in Groups is being set as "Open events". This is causing several issues. How can we completely disable the option to create "Open Events" or "Open Discussion" [if there's such a thing]?

By default when your group is "Invite Only", the events created in this group will be "Invite Only" by default. I am not really sure how is it being "Open Events" for you but I would suggest that you update to 1.4.2 to ensure that this isn't a bug.

3) Refer attachment. We want to hide Create Event option from main dashboard as well as from Manage Group drop-down menu option in groups. How can we accomplish this?

You can edit the file /media/com_easysocial/apps/group/events/widgets/groups/view.html.php and at line 86 locate the codes below and comment / remove it.

echo $theme->output('themes:/apps/group/events/widgets/widget.menu');

Unfortunately this isn't possible at this point of time.

By the way, I strongly advise users to split their questions into separate threads in order for us to manage your issues more efficiently. If all your questions are condensed into a single thread, do take note that you will get a slower response simply because different moderators are working on your issues as we do not maintain a "single person single thread".

Hi Mark/ SI Team

For #2 issue above, unfortunately we can't upgrade to ES 1.4.2 at this time. So need support to resolve the issue, provided credentials. Events created within groups [created as invite only groups] are being created as "Open Events" despite our setting event categories default to "Invite Only". We do not want "Open Events" created in groups.

Cheers!

Hi Mark,

Perhaps you've not changed the FTP port as per the instructions I included in additional comments section. I've tried and it works.

Thx.

Seems like a classic situation. We've tried using WinSCP and SFTP and are able to login. Is it a case of trailing whitespace added during password copy+paste. Not sure how we'll get around resolving this. Added details again.

Hi Juz,

I am really sorry for the delay of this reply as it weekends for all of us here.

I just tried to create an event inside an invite only group and it seems like the event type by default will respect the privacy of the group on your site. You can try to refer to the following group here, yoursite.com/get-connected/groups/item/17-test-invite-group . I also tested this in my local machine and not able to replicate the issue here.

Please advise.

Hi Mark,

1) FTP to upload files to /var/tmp and 2) use SSH to sudo move files to desired location.

Thx.

Hi Juz,

I am not sure why but it seems like the event creation type is working correctly now for that user. Can you try again and see if its working correctly now?

Hi Ezrul, the problem is not resolved. Refer attachment. Try creating an event in a existing group as highlighted. Created as open event in invite only group.

Hi,

We've managed to upgrade to ES1.4.3 and the issue persists. When creating events in invite-only groups, the event is being created as a "Open Events" despite our setting default value to "Invite Only" in event categories.

Pls. help.

Hey Juz,

I have been looking at the codes and it seems like this has always been the behavior of events in a group. Although events are created in an invite only group, it will still be public because group members are not automatically part of the event unless they really want to attend it.

Hey Mark,

To your response I think events created in "invite only groups" should be automatically created as "invite only events" regardless of whether members of that group attend/decline. Creating an event in such a group indicates the preference to keep it "invite only" instead of making an open event. We'll try Ezrul's code and hope that helps to resolve this issue.

Note: In the past events created in "invite only groups" were automatically created as "invite only events". Not sure if this changed from ES 1.3.30 onwards.

Thx.

Hey Juz,

I actually just discussed this with the team and it was actually a bug when you created the event via the form. If you create through the normal event creation link in the group page, it works fine.

Hi Ezrul,

We tested with the code you've provided. Although event was created as invite only, following issues appear:

1) When event created using story form, it appears no stream item generated in the group so that group members notified of event creation.

2) Although event is created as "invite-only", it is appearing in "Recent Events" app even for members who're not part of the "invite-only" group where the event was first created. So members not in group have visibility of the event [which should not be the case].

Appreciate your help in resolving this.

Hi Juz,

I am really sorry for the delay of this reply as it weekends for all of us here.

It seems like there might be some flaws with event creation inside the group with the current system of easysocial. I will test this further and log back any issue into our issue tracker. Hopefully the fix will be ready in the next release of easysocial.

Thanks for understanding.
