I would like to allow registered users to close or delete their accounts.

I am really sorry for the delay of this reply as it is a weekend for us here.
You have to enabled "Account delete" setting from your existing Easysocial profile type, then it will show a link "delete account" from the user edit profile page, you can refer on my attached screenshot below.
