I am sorry for the delay of this reply. Unfortunately there is not possible to add captions and meta descriptions to images in the gallery and thumbnails currently.

Maybe you can vote at my feature request. So the priority for Stackideas to realize these wishes will be a little bit higher

If you're not afraid of some template overriding I've found this doable with custom fields. However, I have a set amount of images I use so captions are quite predictable for me.

Also, if you have a link to the Voice request, I'll happily throw in my vote.
