In ES 1.2 the image popup has the close button on the left as seen here:

From a traditional stand point this is uncommon. We typically read from left to right (I know not everyone does). The user uses the right arrows to navigate through the pictures. Once they are done viewing they will have to move their mouse further to click the x button vs if it was on the right it isn't as far of a distance. However I'll comment that it is "more unique" having it on the left.

Here's a x button method that uses less space as seen here:

This post isn't to say which method is better, but more of a area of discussion and using the best practices for the close button placement.
Thanks for the heads up on this Josh. We actually have our own reasons for placing the "X" on the left but your comments and feedback makes sense too. Will discuss this internally and see if there's anything that we could do to the button. However, I cannot promise you anything as of now

Sounds good Mark. This is one of those things were there isn't necessarily a right way, but possibly one that is easier for the user. Glad to hear that it will be thought upon.

Request accepted.
Desktop view will have close button on the right like Facebook.
Mobile view will have close button on the left like the current one.

Thanks Jensen. So is the reason for it being on the left for mobile view to "compress" menu options so that spacing is better used? Just curious.

Because in mobile view the image is on top and the comments is at the bottom.
User would have to scroll to close the popup. :-)

Good call, we don't want that for cell users. I don't own a cell phone with internet so I haven't been able to test. But I do my best to get responsive results when I can.
