I want to implement the following scheme in my site. Ive tried but it doesnt work so I think my understanding is not correct.

I have created Group for all countries in the world.

I want each country to have a standard set of sub groups or local groups e.g Singapore - Physical Security

Only people who are a member of the Singapore Group can join the SG sub groups.

I then want a set Global Group that any one can join. These will be the same name as the Country Sub Groups eg Global - Physical Security

Member example

John is a member of:

Singapore
Singapore - Physical Security
Global - Physical Security

He cannot join:

Malaysia - Physical Security
Australia - Physical Security

Because he is not in the Malaysia Group

I think I dont understand categories and groups well.

How is this achievable?

Thanks a lot.
Hey Jason,

Hm, it's not possible to have groups in another group and it's not possible to restrict which groups a user can join. You can however restrict which groups a user can create in a group category though.

If you are seeking to restrict creations by category, you could setup a "Singapore network" profile type, which would only be able to create groups under the "Singapore" group category.

I think a puzzle that is missing here for you is probably another access settings under the group category which is a little similar to the creation access but instead for join access, http://take.ms/ufyHK

Would the approach you mention mean that I have to have separate profile types for every country in the world?

Also when I user moved to live in a new country they would then need to 1. Have access removed from their old country & groups in that country and then be assigned to their new country of living and have new permissions to create groups

That's a lot of groups and admin...

Hey Jason,

Yep, that is correct. By adding a new permission to allow group join access, that approach would require the users to be segmented based on profile types.
