I've been a long time PC user (Dell tower and 30" monitor) but am thinking of making the switch to a mac - maybe a Mac Mini and the new Samsumg or Dell 34" monitor. I'm already an iPhone user and like the sync features that iOS and OSX offer.

Just curious to see what other users here in the StackIdeas universe run.
Hi Justin,

I switched to a mac mini earlier this year, I mean earlier in 2014

Very happy with the machine
Before I had a Sony Vaio which also did the job without any problems.

Some commands are a little bit different compared to a Windows machine, but you get used to that pretty quick.
If you work a lot with files like Word and Excel you however might face some more difficulties. I still haven't found a good excel to numbers converter or vic versa.

Hey Justin,

Thank you for the poll. Most of the Stack Ideas team here uses Macbook so we're pretty used to OSXes. Personally, I'm using Office for Mac so I don't have any problems with Microsoft Office's files.

One thing that I really like about Macbook is the hardware; I can do my work comfortably without using any mouse (trackpad is super efficient!) and sits on a beanbag. Can't say the same for any other Windows-based laptops, though.

From a non-techie point of view like me, I see Mac has more restriction as compared to Windows. Don't take my word for it though; the last time I uses Windows was back during Windows 7 days.

I'll have to take a look at the magic trackpad when I get a mac mini. Thanks Ahmad Justin!

Forget mac mini, go with a macbook pro! I was a Windows user too back then but the hardest part for me when switching over is the minimize / maximize and exit button. Clicking on the "x" on the title doesn't really "terminate" the application. You need to hit cmd + q to actually terminate the application.

Oh, not to mention you don't have "New File" when you perform a right click within Finder but you'll get to learn to use command to work around it It improves your understanding over handling files via ssh so in a way, you get to learn and suffer at the same time.

Good to know Mark! Thought about the Macbook Pro, but I'm not sure if it can handle my next monitor :

Looks like the MBP uses the same graphics Intel Iris Graphics as the Mac Mini, so it should run 30+ inch monitors

I was a Mac user from 1984 to 2002 and then I bought two PCs. A Dell laptop and a Dell Desktop. I also own a Mac Mini for video editing, but somehow Apple messed up iMovie, and it is not as good as it was.

I like Windows 7, as I use Camtasia 8 a lot, and some other Windows based apps that are not on the Mac. For me I am not too fussy on Apple OS X as it just frustrated me, and the mouse is not as functional on a Mac. I still have my same Microsoft Mini Infrared Mouse from 1999 that I use on my HP laptop. I hook it up to a new 37 display. Great for my Netflix addiction.

Time for a new one this year, but what to buy? I am going to start testing Windows 10 soon. Not sure if I will go back to a Mac.

Thanks for the feedback Randall! I like Windows 7 too. Windows 8, not so much. Haven't played around with Windows 10. The new "Continuity" features (Phone, SMS and Handoff) in OS X are what caught my attention to think about the move.

I just watched a few YouTube reviews on the Apple Thunderbolt Display - that paired with a MBP looks to be a good fit, especially since the display has the built in mic and camera.

Justin,

I was a faithful Apple Macintosh User & Developer from the time it released in 1984 until 2000. I owned so many Macintosh systems that | could not count them all. The last product that I managed a talented team to deliver was Livestage Professional - the Leading Interactive QuickTime Video Authoring Solution. It has since fallen into the halls of a non updated product. I left back in 2000.

I follow Apple, but their Walled Garden approach to developing for the Macintosh and their devices has turned me off. I am interesting in developing for the Apple Watch and HealthKit, so a new Macintosh will be a must of I do this.

Windows 10 looks promising from all the videos I have watched so far. It's expected to be released later this year. If I buy another Macintosh it will be strictly for Video Editing.

Windows 7 is my OS of choice. Stay away from Windows 8. I'm not happy with my experience with how restrictive Macs can be. The delete button doesn't even delete the selected object. I admit that I haven't used the Macbook Pro so perhaps there are some elements of Mac I have yet to experience.

I used to use Windows until 3 years ago when I realized that I get motivated when working on a mac. Not really sure why but it gives me the sense that I have full control over my mac as compared to Windows and it's dll's

I use a 27 inch iMac most of the time. But I do occasionally use Windows and Ubuntu Linux on my gaming laptop. That said, I much prefer Mac OS X.

Decided to go with a 13" MacBook Pro (8GB Ram & 256GB Flash Drive) with an additional keyboard and trackpad. I'll use it with my current older 30" Dell monitor until the next generation Thunderbolt display is released.

Thanks to everyone for your comments!
