It seems like you have template override this toolbar php file from JoomlaFolder/templates/protostar/html/com_easysocial/toolbar/default.php which caused this issue, because previously that was known issue and we have applied some fix in this file as well, I already help you updated those fix into your site, it should automatically display those notification count.

But take note those system notification will not show up immediately because by default the system will auto check whether this current logged in user got any new message/comment on their status every 2 ~ 3 minute.
