If i'm not getting wrong meaning of your issues, you're asking about that email notification right?
If yes, i have checked in your backend Easydiscuss > Setting > Maintenance > Send email when the page loads - YES (You should set to YES)
Mean when the user load your site that time, the Easydiscuss will process send the email notification to the user.

If you would like the email notification automatically send out every 5 minute, you have to set up the cronjob for run this.

Great ! Yes, if you didn't set the cronjob is just affected got some delay to send out the email notification to the user, because you need to manually to load the page.
If let says I already reply in your discussion post, the email notification already pending status in your mail queue, mean the email notification will not process if no buddy load your page,
But i believe your site will many visitor to view your page, don't worry about that.

Can i know what situation your email notification is not working?
