It seems that how it behave currently as it will shown only red dots and without any counter in it. Maybe you can submit a feature request regarding this issues by creating a new ticket on the forums and set it to "Feature Request", so everyone else could vote for it, the more people request on this, and we will priority consider it.

Odd though that the numbers are standard in the other templates... seemingly just not in Vanilla? I'd certainly vote for them!
