We are hoping to find a solution to auto make people who shop on Virtuemart or register for an event with Vik events a free member in pay plansis this possible?

Currently, PayPlans don't have such a feature that assigns the user to a plan on the basis of VirtueMart shop/event registration.

If you want to assign free plan to user whenever new user register at site , let me know so I'll assist you.

To assign a plan to the user on signup you need to use the PayPlans Plan assignment feature.
You need to enable this setting to use plan assignment on user signup.
Go to Backend PayPlans >> Settings >> Plans, here find Plan Assignment tab and enable "Enable Plan Assignment" option.

Regarding default on user sign up, recently we got one issue that Default Plan (in settings) was not assigned to the user and we already logged this issue internally. In your case, you want to assign a free plan to users on signup which default for all.

For now, you need to Use Plan Assignment rules to assign plans as per user signup.
