Hello,
i have a little bit complicated issue
my current site is http://www.meddybear.net
i am using Jomsocial and i would like to move to easysocial.

my site is very slow, i am using Joomla 2.5
i wanted to upgrade to joomla 3 but since i have a lot of extensions on my site i thought it would be easier to make a totally new site with just few of them so it would be faster.

1. do you recommend me to make a new site? or to modify the current one?
2. from your experience what is making my site so slow like this?
3. in case i decide to make a new site, is there away to move the members of the old site (i have 9k+) to the new easysocial? or what should i exactly do?

thanks for your time
Hello Hanna,

Please find the answers to your inquiries below:

1. do you recommend me to make a new site? or to modify the current one?

What I would suggest you to do right now, is to upgrade your site to 3.x first. Then, only migrate JomSocial to EasySocial. Don't have to re-create another site.

2. from your experience what is making my site so slow like this?

It really depends on how you classified as "slow". How do you define "slow"? Is this related to the web host? Is this related to JomSocial? Maybe you can shed some lights on this and I would be able to provide a proper answer for you.

3. in case i decide to make a new site, is there away to move the members of the old site (i have 9k+) to the new easysocial? or what should i exactly do?

Yes, of course but you really don't want to make a new site as all your hardwork and effort would be lost. Identify the problems and see what can be escalated to fix this If your web host *****, no matter what Joomla extension you run would be slow

Thank you so much for moving the question here and for your answer.
well it seems that i destroyed my site, what i did was:

1. i updated php from 5.3 to 5.4 trough on my server
after waiting 2 hours i couldnt accet to the site and i saw a msg saying that i need at least ph of 5.3.1 to access my site

i called the support and they say that on the server the ph is 5.4 and the problem is not related to them but to joomla

i tried to change again the ph by adding a line on htaccess (AddHandler applicati...) , but then i had totally empty site

so i decided to do a recovery to the site from a backup that i did the same day before doing all this, i have also backup from the day before.

still problem didnt resolve, i could only have a back up from 250 days ago which shows a very old site that i have with half of the members and all the old stuff.

but i couldnt get back the latest version of my site

still with this old version i see a lot of error on the site which are:

if you could help me somehow in getting my site back so i can upgrade the joomla and do all the process that u said i would be grateful

what do you advise? should i change the ph again to ph5.3? what to do?

thanks a lot for your time

Hello Hanna,

Hm, sorry but I am a little lost here. Do you mean they are restricting your database to 2gb only? You are going to face problems if you have lots of private messages though. I believe JomSocial stores their pm's in jos_community_msg and jos_community_msg_recepient

Hello Mark,
no they didnt restrict the database but they said that when the database is more than 1GB then i will have problems like making the site slower or like what i am facing now i cant restore the sit because the backup file is larger than 2GB, i downloaded that file on my pc, but i dont know what should i delete from it in order to make it smaller. is there anyway to open that database back on o my server even if its bigger than 2GB?

Hello Hanna,

I am really sorry for the delay of this reply as it is a weekend for us here. Hm, that backup I believe is simply just a "sql" file. What you can do is to import it using phpmyadmin if you want to import it on your local computer.

Hello, i really sorry for disturbing you with this issue and thanks for your help.
i have tried everything but i couldnt get back my site to work.

everything have started when i wanted to update my php version
i did it from my hosting site and when i saw that nothing has changed i added a line to the htaccess in order to change the php manually, then the site stopped working.

i went to make a restore
i have 2 backups for my site, one is from 250 days ago which is very old site and the other from 2 days ago
i couldnt get back the one of 2 days ago

on godaddy you must create new database in order to have the new version of 5.5 instead of 5.0
i made a new one but i couldnt restore my database there.

What i have now is :
i have a backup database of 2GB on my server
my same databasewith mysql of 5.0
a new database of 5.5

i couldnt connect any of these databases to my site

i want to restore my site from it and cant, is it possible that i lost all the info? all my members?

when i try to access my site i see this msg:
Database connection error (2): Could not connect to MySQL.

i changed the password and username many times from database and in config.php and i am sure the password was correct but this problem couldnt resolve.

can u help me to resolve this?

i leave u down all the info to access my site

thanks a lot

Hello Hanna,

We normally do not provide support for this because this issue isn't even related to any of our products but I'll help you out this time. Before anything else, can you provide us with more details? Perhaps the following access:

1. Phpmyadmin access - Let me know which database is for the current http://www.meddybear.net/

2. Backups of the database 2 days ago - Where can I find this backup file?

Hello Hanna,

I have been fiddling with godaddy but I cannot seem to login to phpmyadmin no matter what I tried. This is what I am getting, http://screencast.com/t/IJ0jPy4d

Also, let me get this clear:

1. MeddyBearNewAge (This is the new database that you want to use?)

2. meddybearnew (This is the database that works?)

Respected Mark, i was getting the same error too, sometimes i could login to phpmyadmin while other times no
i saw somewhere on internet that when the password ends with special characters this makes problems in godaddy so i changed it(look down for the new one)

1. i would like to use meddybearnew1 or meddybearnewage, its no important which one but its important that its 5.5 and not 5.0 like the first 2 databases

2. none of the databases is working now, but med1308802172658 is the only one where the backup worked and it has all the info

so if its possible to move the data that med1308802172658 contains to a new database that has mysql 5.5 (meddybearnew1 or meddybearnewage) and connect it to the site it would resolve the problem

p.s. in case i make a new site and i want as a start jus to move the jomsocial component which is the most important to let site start working, hwo can i move tables from the first phpmyadmin to the other?

thanks again for your time

Hello Hanna,

I was going through your post
May i suggest :-

a) You can copy & reinstall your 2 days old backup first on wamp server
b) Check for site functionality on the wamp server, when it works as per your satisfaction
c) Use Akeeba Backup (if you dont have one - install it) to create backup from Wamp
d) Use Kickstart to Restore on Live Server

Also - one more
Godaddy is not the best one for Joomla
If you seek to host a big community - may be should consider Rackspace or Siteground

May be should help you !!

Hello Hanna,

You can try what Gagan suggested as it could also work but to be honest, I am not too sure what errors do you mean by incompatibility in these files?

Thanks for the suggestion.
I always worked on a live site and it seems that its time to learn how to work on localhost.

I always had problems because of godaddy and i will consider transfering my hosting somewhere else for sure.

@Mark, if i copy a table in phpmyadmin(import) and export it to a new site (new php) which have an upgraded Mysql of 5.5 and joomla 3. ( old one has mysql 5.0 and joomla 5.2) will it work normally or i need to edit these tables before?

I have the table for jomsocial users with all members but the table of joomla has only half of them. Can i recover all the members by using the table of members of jomsocial to get back the table of users of joomla? I am talking about community_users and _users of the site. Or i must get it from the big file of backup that i have?

Thanks again

Hello Hanna,

You should stay away from Godaddy As for recovering the tables, you can try that and you just need to make sure that all the tables jos_community_* and jos_users are copied over.
