Yes, you are right. This redirection is done by payplans easysocial registration plugin.
If Registration plugins are enabled then it will force user's to subscribe plan for registration.

If you don't want to use any of the registration integration of payplans (as user can be registered before subscribing), so you just need to disable all the registration plugins of payplans ,Go to backend Extensions -> Plugin manager -> select type payplansregistration and disable them.
After that when user try to register on site, he will be redirected to registaration page rather then plan page.

And then if I am selling a Pay Plans subscription/plan they ALOS get put in the appropriate Pay Plans related Group.
Let me know you are talking about ES Group / Es Profiletype.

Would it not make sense to create a free plan to register on the site = gain access to the current default Group!

And offer the paid plans.

This way I get to the best of both worlds right?

Tight integration and easy registration for people wanted to just sign up any way!

Yes, you can create one free plan , so user can register for free. If they want to switch to another es profiletype they need to subscribe paid plans.
