May i know how exactly you typed them? I tested this and it does works fine on my end as you can see here http://take.ms/c1LsL. By the way, is it possible for you to provide us with the back end and FTP access to your site to check on this issue.

I understood why it's now working.
My Easydiscuss is set to show the "Nickname" as the user name (thsi is necessary for privacy reasons... many users have their email as username and I can't change it).

Because users only know Nicknames, when they mention them Easydiscuss cannot recognize the user they refer to, as mentions only work with the actual Joomla uaser usernames.

Maybe you can think about adding this feature so that it can also recognize nicknames.

Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately it is not possible to achieve this yet in Easydiscuss.

Perhaps it would be best if you can submit a feature request regarding this issues by creating a new ticket on the forums and set it to "Feature Request" so that everyone else could vote for it. We will prioritize this feature during the development process for the next major version of Easydiscuss if there are more people request on this.
