If you upload multiple pics to media manager, it shows you the images with tick boxes to select them (to multi-select), however if you upload a bunch of new pics, it doesn't show tick boxes on those, and you cant select them.

You can select one of the "tickable" boxes, and then click the non-ticked boxes to get around it, but this is a bug.
