As per your configuration, You have set Usage type to Initial purchase
What initial purchase do is it apply discount on initial purchase means first invoice only. As you are trying to apply discount on Recurring + Free Trial then discount will not apply on free invoice as first payment is free.

If a recurring with free trial plan provides discount code, how to apply the discount code?

For Recurring + free trial plan , discount will not applicable for free trial that's why you are hitting this error.
Trial period should have some price.

Let me know following
1. Do you want to apply discount only on first payment , not on further recurring payments ?
Whether first payment should be free or ?

2. You want to apply discount on all recurring payments. where trial amount is different then regular amount.

In that case you need to use initial purchase discount type on recurring plan (without trial). So when this discount apply , plan will be converted to Recurring + Free trial automatically.

First payment is with free trial 5 days.

# In that case you just need to create Recurring + Free Trial plan , as you already created. no discount needed here.

# If you want to give free 5 days trial period to user using discount code. Then you need to create Recurring + Trial plan.
And create initial purchase discount coupon which will apply 100% discount. So in that way when user apply this discount code then first payment will be free and further recurring will charge with regular amount.
