Since vanilla sidebar module can render menu items, you can create a menu item for the logout action and configure vanilla to render that menu.

Makes sense! I went ahead and did that but noted in the module it says the Render Menu option only takes affect on the mobile version.

Ah yes. Sorry, the module only renders the menu on mobile. Perhaps you could consider adding a module on the sidebar?

The drop down in the topesmenu that has the user's avatar offers a log out option. That avatar is not located in all of the website's pages so I was hoping to add it to the main menu that people log in/register!

If it does become an option please let me know!

Perhaps you could try to place the login module on the "sidebar" position as well since it has a logout button. I will log this as a feature request so that we can insert a sign out link as well on the sidebar.
