I am really sorry for the delay of this reply as it is a weekend for us here.
The filter is located in your Easydiscuss frontpage layout menu type item, check my screenshot below.

Interesting, there must be something wrong with my menuitem for frontpage layout (even though I've used it previously). I can't create a frontpage layout menu item all of a sudden won't save, no filter option). See screenshots to see the difference between items.

Sorry for late reply to this,
It seems like you're using the Joomla 3.3, can you try download this 2 attachment file and replace in
JoomlaFolder\components\com_easydiscuss\views\index\tmpl\default.xml
JoomlaFolder\administrator\components\com_easydiscuss\elements\fields\modal\categories.php
This fixes will be including in next release version of Easydiscuss.
