In the backend of my joomla site, I see komento trying to update itself - although we don't WANT to update!
As our subscription ended, we are now unable to manage comments.

This is crazy, and I believe you should be liable for keeping things functional even when the subscripton date expires!

I would like to clarify one thing is we do not force user to update if there got any new version of Komento and the Komento will still working as usual if the subscription already expired.

Unless someone suddenly press that update button from backend Komento dashboard or Joomla updater so it will trigger to show Komento installation page.

Can you try delete this file from your JoomlaRootFolder/tmp/komento.installation and see how it goes?
