The issue is that the categories will not expand when clicked.

It seems like a later version of a jQuery script is loaded some where in your site most probably by another component or plugin which creates conflict with ED's jQuery script.
Because of this, we have to disable this setting to let the other component/plugin load the jQuery script instead of ED(http://take.ms/L8LO4). Your category module should be working fine now.

This is due to a conflict between the forum view name and the configured Joomla's menu item alias(in your case 'Forums'). The only workaround here is to modify the alias for the forums layout menu item(http://take.ms/R1s5j). Once you do this, your issue should be solved.
