It doesn't make sense to me that superusers creating posts should then have to go to pending posts and "approve" them. Is there no way of turning this off?

There is a bug in 5.0.29 where the "deny" rule wins the "allow" rule. It's not really a bug per-se but this was actually a feature requested by a customer. Having said that, we might have mislooked where the admin shares the same group as the "Registered".

To fix this, download the attached file and upload it into /administrator/components/com_easyblog/includes/acl/

I should add for others that I had to change my user so that superuser was the only group I belonged to.

With this fix, you no longer need to do that. Alternatively update to 5.0.30
