How to limit the number of visible posts ?

Hi Guys,
I wanted to limit the number of posts displayed on one page and add a readmore on the end. Is this possible ?
Since I couldnt find such a feature I've tried to figure out how to shorten posts, e.g. to make for instance only the headings of posts visible. But this was also not successful. By trying different options I've realized finally that the readmore tag doesn't appear in my blog. The content is shortened but no readmore tag is visible. Any advice ?
