You can use the 'shared media' tab and upload the images there(http://take.ms/7mVeQ). After you have done this, you can use back this image again as long as you click on the shared media tab in the media manager.

The image storage path can be configured at Settings>Media>General>Storage Paths: http://take.ms/HtJZs

Shared media can be seen by other authors as well when they access the media manager. My media on the other hand can only be seen by the owner of those images.
