There should be a close button at the top right of the composer as you can see from my screenshot here, http://screencast.com/t/NDruHNjX . However it seems like you open your composer in tmpl=component mode, hence the close button will not appear. You need to manually close the composer browser tab in order to exit it.

tmpl=component mode?
1). I sign in as a regular blogger
2). go to one of the categories
3). click the pencil icon to create a new post
4). a pop-window starts to appear of the templates
5). as it's trying to load, i can see the [close out X icon]
6). when the pop-up window finishes loading
7). it EXPANDS and i cannot see the [close out X icon] anymore

Perhaps you can provide us with your Joomla backend and FTP access so we can check on the issue directly?

Hello Dan,

I've checked your site and found out that System - AntiCopy plugin is causing the issue. I've temporary disabled it and the composer is working fine.
