Is voting only based on setting up a poll question? Is there a way to simply cast a vote in support of the discussion question?

Yes we are talking about the same thing. Your screenshot (Title) shows what I thought is the voting.
The confusing part for me, is that this doesn't seem intuitive to the user that they are supposed to use this mechanism to vote with. There is no 'Vote Here' button.
Unless I don't understand the underlying concept of how the Voting mechanism is supposed to be used in the Discussion forum.

Correct me if I'm wrong, you want a voting system where user can choose which option they want to vote and they can see percentage of overall vote, right? If so, Easydiscuss has provided Polls system which is different with Vote system. Vote system is like a 'Like' button in Facebook. Yes we were expecting the Vote system to work similar to a 'Like' button in Facebook. Is there another compenent for that?

I thought we did enable the voting system, as in this screen grab but my point was that this isn't intuitive for vistors to click on to cast their vote

Regarding your concern that you can try change the Easydiscuss theme and see which theme you feel that is make user to intuitive to cast their vote?
