In many communities, users set up Groups and all to often, the Group creator starts a Group with intentions and some ideas and enthusiasm but too often, the Group fails to gain traction because the Group Admin did not think through how to ncrease the number of members who participate in the Group, resulting in a stale or dead group. This can be a poor idea for a group, and many other reasons.

These dead groups or stale groups have a tendency to clutter up the Groups area, and this can cause damage to the overall network or community.

Stackoverflow overcomes this by making group creators prove the Groups overall contribution value to the community.

To overcome this issue there should be some new feature settings added such as: some of these group pruning features:

1, the Group Creator should agree that if the Group does not achieve a certain level of members and active discussions within a period of days set by the the Admin then the Group will be unpublished until the Group creator can prove they have a plan to make it work.

2. Allow the Site Admin to set the default number of group members that must be achieved in a default number of days.

3. Default number of discussion activities per a set number of days to keep the Group in good standing before it is placed on notice. A notice period with a default number of days to allow the group creator to rectify the issues of poor membership in the Group. F the Group doesn't meet the criteria by the notice period, then it should be unpublished.

Add your ideas, and feature suggestions to Stamp Outt or help Prune Dead Groups at creation point, because each site Administrator will be faced with this grouping pruning issue.

Too much moderation is not good for a community.

Cool idea Randall!

Some thoughts...
- A reminder email for Group Owner when there are no activities for given number of days, months
- Notification email to Site Admin or a Backend Dashboard under Groups to see inactive / active Groups with Filter for days, months. Maybe an option to select Group or Groups to Notify Group Owners and a message box opens to email them them that their Group has been inactive for ... and about to be unpublished or deleted.

I also agree with checksum on this but I do like the idea of "automated moderation" but again, I guess it's a different requirements for different site owners.
