This inquiry seems a quite subjective, where it is depend on how group chat is used for, if it more toward discussion forum chat I will suggest to use EasyDiscuss where user can chat according to the topic.
If it is more toward group (interest) chat, perhaps, can use EasySocial's group functionality where it is will more specific to the certain interest.
