Can you help me understand the difference between a Group Update and a Group Announcement?

It seems they both do the same thing in terms of post of the activity stream of the group and send a nice email update through to the members.

I'm trying to get things as simple and non-confusing as possible for my users, so if there's no real difference between an Update and an Announcement, then wouldn't it be a good idea to 'de-clutter' and merge them in terms of the complexity of filter options on the left side of a group page?
Hello Andy,

Posting an update in a group is just like posting a status update on your profile page. News however would appear on the news section within a group

OK so maybe it's just my template styling (I use Frosty) but I can't really see a 'News' section... in the 'filter by' there's 'Announcements' and 'Updates' but these seem to have the same 'priority' in terms of visibility.

I think that's where my confusion is. My group administrators normally post using the 'Share what's new' link and don't always do the harder to find 'announcements' option... I think they'd need to visibly see that announcements get more weight to do that....

Hopefully you see what I mean. Announcements just don't seem to stand out in any way in the Frosty template.

One possible way to fix this is to just have announcements as a section at the top by 'Details' and 'Timeline' - That way they get more attention and focus than just the usual updates. Just a suggestion.

Hello Andy,

Those "filters" are basically stream filters. Announcements, discussions etc are actually app views where it has a custom view to it When you filter items, the presentation of those items are in a stream form as opposed to those app views.
