Dear Team,

i got the hint that i need to deactivate the Social Media Buttons in my Blog because they dont meet the german data protection law requirements which needs a 2 step activation of the buttons. SO i need to deactivate these buttons and could not use the full potential of EasyBlog. Do you have plans to implement this feature? Is it possible to integrate another social media share button system like Shariff?

Thx and all best for 2017, Nic
Hello Nicolas,

Hm, this is something new to me. I did not know that these buttons are prohibited in German protection law. We do not have integrations with Shariff at this point of time but this plugin does seem to be pretty interesting.

As far as I know the law here in germany is not really clear but data protection is a big thing here and you can get sued ridiculously easy by a competitor in germany. Perhaps you can try something like this instead of the built in buttons:

I have seen the news about Facebook versus EU but never seen something that drastic with Germany though. This is something really new to me. I guess this is why some of them requested us to integrate with Xing over LinkedIn.

Yeah, law is actually not really clear but it is easy to get sued to pay 1000 - 2000 Euro because of this. Here in Germany we have an own bad industry which is based on sending serve notices for such things like missing or incomplete "Legals" section or false implemented social media buttons. Basicly the idea behind the data protection is not bad, but with this "Serve notice" industry behind it is completely corrupted and dangerous for private users as well small grassroot initiatives like ours.

@Sabih Is it easy to integrate this buttons you suggested into the EasyBlog system? Is there an option is the backend to implement own third-party buttons or will this come with programming? Thx for the hint.

@Mark Basicly I think that EasyBlog have a plus if you integrate the option to use third-party social plugins (i guess this is pretty hard to realize)

I will check this option with my Web Developer angel in 2017 who helps our volunteer initiative for free. Maybe i have the iknowledge to implement this or he has to help me if it is not to much.

Thanks for the input on this Nicolas. It has been our dream to be able to use our own methods to render these social buttons. I honestly hate these original buttons that are provided by these sites because not only it slows down the entire page, it is problematic at times and we have zero control over these buttons.

For instance, if a user tells us the Facebook button doesn't appear, we have absolutely no idea and all we can do is to ask Facebook and out of 10 times sending them a question, if we are lucky, we get 1 response from them. Most of the time, these e-mails either go missing or they couldn't care less about your sites.

I am pretty excited about Shariff and looking at possible ways to explore this concept.

I am sorry to tell you but I have never used this plugin so I can not tell anything about it. I do not use anything related to any social media platform. But it is a free download so I would suggest testing it on a dev site.

... the data protection law affects also my project.
Mark, this would be very cool to have own new social button feature in all tools of Stackideas
or at least for Easyblog a "Like Button", the same as you have in EasyDiscuss.

In fact it affects all European based websites
Unfortunately the same is true for ED and ES

What about tools like Addthis / Sharethis ? Are they also affected by the German laws?

Mark,

The privacy policies in Europe are regulated by European Directives.
These directives must be applied by every member state in their own country by a certain time limit.
Some countries enforce these laws faster than other countries but at the end every member state applies the European Directive in its own applicable law and might slightly differ.

If you have time to go thru all sub-levels / sub-categories / linked textes / and so on...
https://ec.europa.eu/digital-single-market/en/cybersecurity-privacy#Article

Please visit the page then click on the share button and see the "Privacy notice" under the custom buttons:
" If you click on a social network / bookmark site you will leave the EUROPA Website and go to a third party site which may have a different privacy policy from us."

Also one of the issue with the law is that social buttons like the ones from Facebook already place tracking cookies on the user without prior consent...

You have now removed from ES2 the integration option, but it was a very good option for us to choose the sharing channels.

Addthis/Sharethis services place cookies and has different privacy policies than our own websites...

Hm, are you saying that this rule is applied to all EU countries or only Germany?

Germany follows EU directives like all other member states do.
EU directives must be applied by all EU member countries in their own national law before a given deadline.
It means at the end all European countries apply the directive (law), (but it might slightly differ from one EU member country to another - not to enter in the details forget this part).
