I know there are some posts about the upcoming EU GDPR regulations, but was wondering if the AcyMailing plugin that allows site users to opt into receiving email newsletters could be amended to provide two options: Yes or No. There would be no default setting, so the user would need to actively decide whether or not to receive emails. This would ensure that the user's choice is clear and that the site owner can be confident that those who wish to be updated via email are.
Hey Andrew,

Can you try download my attached files and replace into these following file location and see how it goes?

Now it should show the radio button there when use this toggler type from this acymailing custom field.

JoomlaFolder/language/en-GB/en-GB.com_easysocial.ini
JoomlaFolder/media/com_easysocial/apps/fields/user/acymailing/acymailing.php
JoomlaFolder/media/com_easysocial/apps/fields/user/acymailing/themes/default/content.php

Note : make sure you have backup the original file before you replace the file.

Hey Andrew,

Hm, not really sure if I understand you here but the ACYMailing field is already a checkbox field where the user would need to check the checkbox to ensure that they subscribe. Isn't that sufficient? I am not too sure if having 2 different options makes much sense as it would then mean that if the user wants to subscribe, they need to have both options enabled.

I make this suggestion because people tend to go with default settings, which is why so many organisations have traditionally had the opt-in as the default. This will fall foul of GDPR (if I have understood the ICO documentation correctly). It is all about the user making an informed decision and consenting to being contacted. By having two options - Yes and No - and having neither selected as default, the user must decide.

Thanks for your input Andrew, we will probably add an option for this in next release version so admin can decide to render checkbox or boolean type for this acymailing custom field in the registration form.

It's great that StackIdeas implemented this so quickly. The only issue I am having with it is that No is the default value. What I wanted to do was have neither Yes nor No set by default and set the field to be required. That way the user must actively decide whether to subscribe or not. I can't see how to do this, but maybe I am missing something. I hope Arlex can clarify this.

We will consider to add this default value option in next release version.

For now, you can temporary download my attached file and replace into this -> JoomlaFolder/media/com_easysocial/apps/fields/user/acymailing/acymailing.php

So it will show the YES by default now.

Hi Arlex,

Thanks but this is not what we need. To be compliant with GDPR the user must opt in to receive newsletters so having Yes as the default setting would be in breach of this. We currently require users to opt in anyway, so until we can have Yes and No as alternatives, with neither set as default (i.e. there is no default setting) and make the field required, we will need to stay with what we have. The problem with this is that many users probably skip the newsletter opt-in so do not receive our newsletters. By making the newsletter field required and having no default setting the user will have to actively choose the newsletter option. The user is making an informed decision.

Hey Andrew,

Can you take a look of my following explanation and see whether i got your meaning correctly?

1. Do not set any default value for this acymailing field
2. Once the admin set this acymailing field to required
3. User will automatically notice there got the required field after click submit button from the registration form.

Hi Arlex,

Yes that is correct.

  1. The AcyMailing field would be set to 'Required' so it has to be completed
  2. There would be no default value: the user must therefore select "Yes" or "No"
  3. If the user does not select "Yes" or "No" and tries to submit the form, a message will show that this field must be completed.

In this way the user actively consents to either receiving or not receiving the newsletter. The user's wishes are therefore met and the site owner knows that the user has made a conscious decision.

Kind regards,

Andrew

Hi Arlex,

Thanks very much. I have backed up and installed the files on localhost, but see no difference. Sorry! I have set the field to required and tried both Toggle and Checkbox options. I will double-check tomorrow that I have not made any mistakes.

Kind regards,

Andrew

Currently only work for 'Toggler' type for the required acymailing field (by default no any value selected), the `Checkbox` type we still thinking how to implement this same way like 'Toggler' type.

Alright, keep us update regarding this.
