Hey guys,
I am getting feedback that there are too many e-mails sent out from my site... they are all legitimate, but is there a way to reduce them by certain strategies like:

A. Not sending emails when the user is online.
B. Bunching up similar updates at the end of the day - limit to low priority items such as: X person liked X thing. If we get 60 likes on a shared story, that is 60 annoying emails.
C. If someone sends a new conversation message, limit it to X person sent you a new message. Rather than sending several emails for every individual message.

Just pointing out some concerns that site members are complaining about.
Hello Jannik,

some of our user complained about to much eMails also. We told them that there is a easy way to have their personal settings which is provided with every mail.
I remember that at the beginning of my Facebook account, I also get to much eMails before I changed the settings.

I would recommend to disable the most "useless" messages by default (in the ES backend) and motivate your users to change their settings.

Regards
Manuel

Oh yeah, I am aware of both of those options, but some users just get annoyed before investigating their settings... and then they complain to us. So it would be nice if it would avoid sending mails when online, bunch up similar low priority items, send a vague email that there is a new notification, and not send more until they have checked the first one etc.

I do not agree to not send eMails while people are online. We all use mobile-phones and 20 - 30% are online via mobile-phone or pads, those users are often online the hole day and sometimes they just there to read a blog post. They come back if they get a eMail that there is "something new". But I agree, some users really don`t invastigate their options and complain everything to us. Don`t care about this users to much, be friendly but clear with your words. That is how we solved our problems with "troublemakers" and get friends with almost all of them

Well, it should be a setting in the backend. But sending emails when they already get the notification on the site is redundant. It is spam and it is server load. Two things that we want to get rid of

There's already a settings page where user can customize their alert settings. I don't think it makes sense to not send them an email when they are online. It's always better to have notifications and then customize their alert settings to choose their preferred notification types.

Well, what about bunching up similar messages? or only sending out that there is a new notification and not sending one out per notification. Send out one, instead of 100 emails for 100 different notifications. A simple "You have a new notification" or "People are interacting with your profile" would suffice? There must be a way to limit emails to one or so, just saying there is activity on your profile.

Example, right now if I like, comment, friend, convo message etc. etc. those are all emails. But one simple email saying someone is interacting with your profile, log on to check it out, would be more than enough to get them to log in.

It's going to be really tricky to have summaries but we'll see what we can do in the future.

Yeah, I never said it would be easy. However, it would greatly improve the experience for subscribers of EasySocial based websites I appreciate you considering this for the future.

Noted. I have posted this suggestion in the Voices section: http://stackideas.com/voices/easysocial/item/444

P.S. Please consider cleaning up in the EasySocial Voices section soon. There are suggestions from day one that clearly will never be implemented that are just causing clutter Also, please consider adding a photo upload feature ^^

Thanks Jannik Yes, once we start with our features meeting for 1.4, we'll be heading to the Voices section and that is why I am requesting everyone to post and vote on the voices area.
