Hi There,

So I enabled the field Posting Permissions in Group category and it is kind of confusing. Only on the option: Allow group members to post into this group and there is a select option for All or Selected. When I choose Selected, I am seeing the Profile Types. Is this right? Based on the description or label of the check box "Allow group members to post into this group" I am expecting to see the lists of the Group Members not profile types since they are not members of the group in general.

https://screencast.com/t/g0a4c8gPTL

Let's say I selected a Profile Type, what happened then? All users from that profile type will be able to posts in Closed/Private Group where they are not a member?

What happened if I just leave the default to All? Only group members can posts?

Confusing? No?

Thanks,

Jackson
Thanks for your input, I already discuss with our developer regarding this, we will consider to add this in Easysocial 2.1.

Hi Jackson,
Sorry to hear that the custom field is confusing. The posting permission custom field basically narrows down the permission level among the group members, so there's no need to worry about non-group members posting in the group.
The 'Allow group members to post into this group' option refers to non-admin group members.
Perhaps you can suggest better wording that provides more clarity for the options.

Hi Raymond,

Let me understand how that particular custom field works, if you can confirm it please.

- What happened if I DO NOT check that 'Allow group members to post into this group'? Automatically, all members of the group (Owner, Admin, Member) should be able to posts, right?

If you say right, what is the purpose of this custom field if I check or enable it and choose ALL? Same thing right?

Now, what confuses me is actually the SELECTED option. It is because you guys chose to show the Profile Types. Why Profile Types? Care to explain the logic behind it? I was expecting it to show a search field like in the stories sharing permissions where I can choose Custom and search for users who I want to share the posts with. And it should only search through the members of the group depending on the Group permission either it is Open, Closed or InviteOnly.

As to my suggestion, Selected is really fine or Custom to make it more consistent. But profile types? Wait, does it mean, any users who are members of the group that belong to any other profile types should be able to posts if their type is selected? Is that how it works? Still scratching my head, since a user regardless of Profile Type can be a member or join a Group. And what happened to the members of the group who belongs to a not selected profile type/s, they cannot post anymore?

Ok, here's my suggestions:

1. Change the SELECTED text to By Profile Type and short description below that says something like: Only selected users who's Profile Type is selected will be able to posts in this group.
2. Add a third option, Custom, same as in the Story Privacy. Here's the screenshot: https://screencast.com/t/2RXyZBJYhvO but it only pulls members of the group and not friends.

Thanks,

Jackson

Hey Jackson,
If all the options are not selected in the posting permissions custom field, all group members will not be able to post, excluding the group owner and site admin.
The reason we allow selection by profile types is that they aggregate the users making the selection less tedious compared to individual user selection. Image if the group has lots of users, it'll be too troublesome to select individual users.
For selected, only selected profile types will be able to post. Group members belonging to unselected profile types will not be able to post.
Thanks for providing us your suggestions on the issue. For the description, I will log this in our tracker so we can discuss this with the devs.
As for the custom option, perhaps you can start a feature request to expose other users to the idea.

Hi Raymond,

Thank you for explaining further how that particular custom fields work. Now I get it!

The reason we allow selection by profile types is that they aggregate the users making the selection less tedious compared to individual user selection. Image if the group has lots of users, it'll be too troublesome to select individual users.

I got you, but you are only thinking of "a lot of users" that is why I suggested a 3rd option which is individual for small sized groups which does not have much members.

I'm not going to create a feature request for custom option, just because in my opinion, this feature when added would benefit site admins or Group Owners who chose to make their group read only but wanted to make selected members able to posts. Providing By Profile Type is a plus, but what if a Group Owner just wanted particular member or members to be able to post and not all people in a profile type? With that question, now it seems like logical to have a custom option and besides your dev guys will not have to create the algorithm from scratch because it is already available in the story privacy. I will leave you the prerogative to decide whether to bring it up in your dev discussion.

Thanks,

Jackson
