hey michael,
are you running on easyblog 3.8 or below? if so the auto-updater won't work. in general the auto-updater only works within the same release number, so when you're on 3.9.x you can always use it as long as the latest available version is also a 3.9.x.x version - if it turns to 4.0 then again the auto-updater won't work.
for now, as I guess you're not on 3.9 already, you need to upgrade manually. hope that helps
