When I post to a category, it does not send the notification email. Note: I am not using cron currently. I checked the email activity queue. The email is listed. It just has not been sent.

Hey Dietrich,

Can you check if the email is sent? I turned on send email on page load at Settings>Notifications(http://take.ms/V0PxF). This will send the emails when a user loads the page.

However, this method of sending emails is not good as it would slow the page loading speed and also not send them if no user visits EasyDiscuss pages.

I recommend that you set up a cronjob for EasyDiscuss on your server an turn off the send email on page load setting as cronjobs are a lot more efficient in handling scheduled tasks.
