I am sorry but customization of the custom fields aren't supported in our support scope and I really wouldn't suggest you to modify the gender field to behave that way as it then seves a different purpose.
If you would need just a dropdown option, why don't you create a new dropdown field for the profile type and allow the user to select the option accordingly?
