Hi,
I had my Joomla site upgraded from 2.5 to the latest version 3.4. Since then easyblog does no longer work. The blog entries are not saved, only the title so that you get an empty blog entry. Which cannot be deleted by the users themselves.
So today I tried to upgrade Easyblog itself (old version 3.9) to its latest version (5.something), retrieved a new api key and saved it first. A click on the updater however does not do anything, nothing happens. Just like the click on "view logs" - Easyblog seems to be "frozen" no matter what I try either on the frontend or the backend: no reaction at all. I have no idea what to do now. Can anyone help?
Best wishes
Dirk
Hi Dirk Albrodt,

I am really sorry that the EasyBlog 3.9 updater is not working in upgrading to EasyBlog 5, you will need to download the installer from your dashboard and install from joomla installer.
If you need our help, do provide us the site access at Site Details at the reply below
Check my screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/0lHXJyDWngvS
However, can you do a backup of the site first before upgrading.

Hi,
Do I have to uninstall the old version before installing the new one?

Hi Dirk Albrodt,

you may try to rename all the com_easyblog folder in
>> administrator/component/com_easyblog
>> component/com_easyblog
>> media/com_easyblog
>> media/foundry
so that you can access to the backend, then upload the EB5 installer through in joomla installer
If still cant work, can you provide us the site access in Site Details at the reply below
Check my screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/0lHXJyDWngvS
so that we can have a better view from your site?

Hi Ethan,
I tried to follow your instructions but unfortunately the installation did not work through. At a point it stopped without having Easyblog installed. So may I ask you for a little more of your support?

Hello Dirk.

Can you consult with your webhosting provider to increase your site PHP memory_limit to 128M?

Then try re-install EasyBlog 5 on your site.

Hi Dirk Albrodt,

I notice your PHP memory_limit does not meet our system requirement.
Check my screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/IP3RevcrP
Can you consult with your web hosting provider to increase the memory_limit and update us after your consultation so that we can perform the installation.

Hey Dirk,

I have updated your site to the latest version of EasyBlog 5.0.16. Can you give this a try again?

Hi Mark,
Thanks for helping. I am trying to get easyblog going, it seems to have made a step forward, but one thing has come up that is very frustrating: the latest blogposts module is empty and - foolish me - I tried to change that. Instead of showing the latest posts it somehow damaged the template putting the blogposts themselves on the "pole position" of the homepage. I checked any possible solution on the backend, nothing helped. I even unpublished the module - nothing. The only way to get the "normal" articles back to front was to set an end of publishing date before today. Thank God this made the mess disappear. It was my last measure before uninstalling it. For some unknown reason the module I used to use with version 3 is back where it belonged - but still empty. I am out of ideas.

When I went to the administration of the Easyblog component (not the module) I discovered this:

Warning: is_file() [function.is-file]: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/home/xxx/www/wwwadministrator/templates/isis3/html/com_easyblog/styles/style.css) is not within the allowed path(s): (/home/xxx/www/www:/tmp::/home/xxx/www/www/tmp:/home/essenzen/www/www/logs) in /home/xxx/www/www/libraries/joomla/filesystem/file.php on line 562

No idea what that means. Could it have to do with the strange module behaviour?

When I tried to trash the empty blogpost - the one because of which I came here in the first place - I got another error:

An error has occurred.
1054 Unknown column 'language' in 'field list' SQL=INSERT INTO `en_finder_tokens` (`term`,`stem`,`common`,`phrase`,`weight`,`context`,`language`) VALUES ('fünffingerkraut', 'fünffingerkraut', 0, 0, 1, 1, '*'),('potentilla', 'potentilla', 0, 0, 0.6667, 1, '*'),('reptans', 'reptans', 0, 0, 0.4667, 1, '*'),('fünffingerkraut potentilla', 'fünffingerkraut potentilla', 0, 1, 1.8667, 1, '*'),('fünffingerkraut potentilla reptans', 'fünffingerkraut potentilla reptans', 0, 1, 2, 1, '*'),('potentilla reptans', 'potentilla reptans', 0, 1, 1.6, 1, '*')

Again ... no idea what that means.

May I add a personal comment? I have been using Easyblog for a while and have always been overwhelmed with the features of which the most I do not even understand what they do and mean (could be because English is not my mother language), so mostly with every new installation first thing I do is go to the backend and disable 90% of the features in order to make Easyblog really easy. Nevertheless the feedback of my few - admittedly unexperienced - bloggers is that they have problems using Easyblog, find it not intuitive and always struggle with it. So my idea is: would it be possible to create a kind of "light version", an Easyblog reduced to the core of simple blogging? I understand many of your customers want this huge software with tons of features and I guess they know how to handle it. However there may be a couple more users like me who find Easyblog getting more and more difficult to use, get frustrated and consider alternatives. Please do not get me wrong I do not want to criticize your work and effort - but if I had a choice I would pay twice the price for half of the features;) .

Thanks for your patience.
Best wishes
Dirk

Hello Dirk

I have helped you with the process. This error message will up if you set the Error Reporting to Maximum. You can consult with your webhosting provider to turn off Open basedir.

Regarding the second issue, this is because your database is outdated. I have helped you to update your database and I don't hit this error message anymore when tried to put a blog post to trash.

Hope this help

Hi Izzan,
Thank you very much for helping.
I am going to try again to use the module today. Regarding the outdated database - this is kind of surprising to me, should I have known it? How could I know it? I ask since I may turn to the developer I hired (and paid) for upgrading my site only a month ago, shouldn't everything be up to date after he finished his work?

Hi Dirk Albrodt,

You're welcome.

I have consult with my colleague Izzan regarding this outdated database, he noticed your Joomla backend > extension > extension manager > Database - (similar screenshot) have listed 36 table is not updated, so what he tried to do is click "FIX" button on the top, then resolved this issues.

Hi Arlex,
Thank you very much for explaining!
It is great to have your help and support ... and yet I have to bother you once more, still struggling, sorry. How can I manage that the latest blogs module on the frontpage shows the latest blogs instead of ... nothing? 2.) When I go through the blog entries sorted by date in the backend, page 3 does not show. Instead I get "An error has occurred. 400 Unable to set as revision as current revision on post." When I do it backwards it works, so it does not seem a big thing, but yet strange - and very reliable, I tried to see page 3 a couple of times starting from the beginning and repeatedly got the error. Starting with the last page 7 and going backwards to page 3 the error does not show up...
