For the posts to show up under the "Featured" section, you first need to feature the blog post I have checked your site and none of the posts are actually featured.

I have featured one of the post from the back end and you can see the slider now on the front page of the blog layout

In terms of getting the "categories", "recent blog posts" and "tag cloud" modules to appear on the right hand side - is there a specific module position I need to assign them to?

With the one's I've tried so far for some reason they appear right at the bottom of the page - or you just see white space on the right - so not sure if the module position I'm using is incorrect, or if it's a problem with the responsive template

I think you should refer to your Joomla template "module positions". To place something on the right, it actually depends on the Joomla template
