Hi,

Our site is getting hacked by simplepie.org. They are hitting our feed hundreds of times within a minute which is causing the site to crash. It seems like it is coming from the rss feed. Is there anyway to shut of the RSS functionality?

Hey there,

Instead of blocking the requests, I would suggest that you request your hosting provider to perform a null route from these ip addresses.

Anyway, if you want to disable the RSS feed, you could disable it from the back end settings located in Settings > General > RSS Feeds and disable the option "Enable RSS Feeds".

Hi Mark,

We selected that disable option a few days ago but we still had an incident since then.

Our hosting block simplepie.org but we are still getting this requests.

173.199.184.232 is the IP address of our server. It looks like our server is making the request.

What is EasyBlogs relationship with simplepie.org?

Simplepie is actually a PHP parser. Are you performing any RSS feed imports in EasyBlog?

Go to the back end of EasyBlog and click on the Feed Importer on the side bar and see if there are any feeds setup there?

We created an incidence of the live site at http://vcwest33.sohostage.com and added the access information to the page you referenced (http://stackideas.com/dashboard/site) - please advise.

Also, one of our staff advised that the issue may be related to a posting made the day before the problem started: (http://www.vcwest33.sohostage.com/index.php/blog/entry/living-the-vcclife-the-world-s-first-destination-show-on-snapchat) - that posting has a hash in the title that he thought could potentially cause problems. Meanwhile we have blocked the script to the best of our ability by blocking the server's IP address from accessing that rss link via the site .htaccess file.

This is the feeedback from the MST developer:
In my test environment I tried with a mashable feed and it worked but your feed url is not working.

I tried to check with two feed validator and it passed but there are some suggestions

1. http://www.feedvalidator.org/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.vcwest33.sohostage.com%2Fblog%2Flatest%3Fformat%3Dfeed%26type%3Drss
2. https://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.vcwest33.sohostage.com%2Fblog%2Flatest%3Fformat%3Dfeed%26type%3Drss

So the current situation is MST is not working or not able to parse the rss feed. What I will suggest the rss feed creator can output as hash as char code while creating rss feed.

So they are going to pursue a fix on their end, but suggested that the # character in a blog Title be encoded as well.

Yes, because some of the tag is not generated by Easyblog, you can refer on my attached screenshot below.
If you open this file JoomlaFolder\libraries\joomla\document\renderer\feed\rss.php, you can see how the Joomla generate these feed attribute.
