Actually, that is the default behavior for the Custom Field's list and in order to choose multiple choice just highlight it will do.

After you submit a post, the reason it has the comma is because this is to let users easy to understand how many values you selected.

Yes, I know the dropdown behavior is so common but not very user friendly

At the comma you could add a space from the system. I do that, and the result is typographically correct.
