you provided the answer below, which is great. was just wondering if it is possible to control this per category, i.e. so one category would list the articles under it but another category wouldn't?

Thanks for reaching out to us. If you are referring to http://take.ms/nnD16 yes, it is possible. By going to backend > easyblog > settings > layout > categories > disabled 'show recent posts' and 'show authors' as shown here http://take.ms/upUEw

Unfortunately, the settings under Settings>Layout>Categories cannot be different across different categories. We appreciate your understanding on this.
May I know why you would like to only display posts for certain categories only? If you don't want any posts/categories to show in the frontend, you can always unpublish those posts/categories.

it was just so that we could display some key info articles under a main info category and then show our other categories and subcategories on the same page but without all of the articles also showing (for neatness) ta
