I think I've got it mostly figured out but can't see where the text "What's going on in the communityu" is coming from. Does "unity" have a param screen somewhere in the system?

Ah, that text is actually translated from the language file. All you need to do is to load up /language/en-GB/en-GB.com_easysocial.ini and locate the codes below,
